Brass Compositions

Octatonal Dance

Low brass trio concertante for Euphonium, Horn in F, and Tuba. This concert etude is mostly based on Octatonal harmony (Diminished scale), including Argentine folk rhythms and New York jazz influences. The extended/contemporary techniques: flutter tongue, tap bell, suck no pitch, foot stomp, etc, should be considered optional if the player is not comfortable with it. Dynamics may be adjusted to optimize balance.

Park Slope Fanfare

For Trumpet, Horn and Trombone.

The sounds of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood are represented in this Fanfare (church bells, car traffic, hovering helicopters, sirens, multicultural festivities and street musicians practicing scales).

Park Slope Fanfare is to be performed moderato e ritmico, ad lib. on the cadenzas and special effects (written as triangle shapes) and extended techniques as “suck no pitch” effects (written as x). The percussion fantasy (letter J) should showcase the inventiveness of the trio.

Duration approx. 6 min.
