Brooklyn Folk Divertimento for Wind Quintet

Brooklyn Folk Divertimento for Wind Quintet by Carlos Pavan. From the composer: "This Brooklyn Folk Divertimento was mostly written in 2013 and edited in 2021/22, using a tango popular bass line but modified into folk/danza rhythm alongside my New York jazz influences in the harmony. Also, there are connotations of a hot Brooklyn summer night as contrast for balance."

MALAMBO connotations

Malambo is an Argentine male folk/native dance from the Pampas. This work was developed after a short traditional malambo solo guitar piece by guitarist Hector Ayala (1914 – 1990). The percussion fantasy (letter J) should showcase the inventiveness of the trio ” imitating the gaucho tap dance.” To be performed ritmico e con brio. Dynamics may be adjusted to optimize balance.

Two Pieces for Clarinet and Guitar

Two Pieces for Clarinet and Guitar by Carlos Pavan. Composer and guitarist Carlos Pavan was born in Argentina and has lived in New York City since the year 2000. The Rhapsody is based on the Argentine "estilo rhythm," a sort of gaucho milonga waltz arpeggio, and the Fantasia is based on a guitar chord built on 5ths intervals and contrary motion counterpoint.

Bartokian Fantasy

This Fantasy is inspired by Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Particularly the first movement which features the trumpet’s theme with quartal/octatonal harmony (diminished scale). My connection with Bartok’s music is through the use of folk elements.

Fantasias Concertantes for Bassoon and Guitar

Fantasias Concertantes for Bassoon and Guitar by Carlos Pavan. Composer and guitarist Carlos Pavan was born in Argentina and has lived in New York City since the year 2000. In three movements, After Bartók is inspired by Concerto for Orchestra's first movement (the trumpet's theme/quartal harmony/octatonic scale), After Hindemith is based on Symphonic Metamorphosis (2nd movement "Turandot") using pentatonic/whole tone scale/contrary motion counterpoint, and After Stravinsky is inspired by The Rite of Spring & Symphonies of Wind Instruments, using mostly octatonic harmony and jazz concepts.

Preludio, Danza y Fuga

Originally written in 2017 and edited in 2021, this work is based on the guitar arpeggio from Bach D minor prelude (BWV 999). The melody is my invention being modified for the Danza (with Argentine folk rhythms & jazz harmonies), and a simple Fugue with the main arpeggio reappearing at the end. Dynamics may be adjusted to optimize balance.
